Cleaning Tips for Stone, Granite & Ceramic Floor Tiles
Floor tiles are a popular option for many Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania homeowners. While generally low maintenance, tiles will require some care and cleaning to be kept in top shape. See our cleaning solutions below for tips on everyday cleaning and stubborn stain removal.
Everyday Cleaning for Tile Floors
Depending on foot traffic and use of the space, regular cleaning will need to take place every day or a few times a week. For this basic cleaning, start off by sweeping or vacuuming the floor to remove all particles of dirt, sand, and food. If not removed regularly, these particles can leave scratches on your tile floors. Once you’ve removed the dirt, it’s time to mop. For your cleaning solution, we recommend using mixing a mild detergent mixed with hot water. For those of you who prefer a more organic cleaning solution, create your own detergent using lemon juice and vinegar mixed with hot water. The cleaning solution can then be applied to the tile using a rag instead of a sponge mop.
Why shouldn’t you use a sponge mop on your tile floors? This will push the dirty water into the grout and soil it. To avoid grout stains and cloudy film across your floors, change your bucket of cleaning solution often. If you do end up with a hazy layer covering your floor, it can easily be removed with a non-abrasive, all-purpose cleaner.
Removing Grout Stains From Tile Floors
To remove stubborn grout stains, start by mixing baking soda and water to create a paste-like solution. Apply a generous layer to the stain, letting it sit overnight. After 24 hours, the solution can be scrubbed off with a nylon brush. Avoid using a metal brush for this part, as it will scratch your tile surface. Once the paste has been removed, wait another 24 hours for the grout to fully dry before adding a silicone-based grout sealer to protect the grout from future stains.
Removing Stains From Ceramic Floor Tile
Knowing how to clean your tile floors properly will keep them looking their best for many years to come. Whether your tile has been stained by food, grease, or ink, or any other household item, there is likely a way to return your tile to its original state. Try these stain removal tricks for all stubborn tile marks.
Beverage or food stains. These food and beverage stains should come out with some hot water and detergent. If the stain is still visible, blot the area with hydrogen peroxide.
Grease stains. Wash grease stains with club soda and water. If the stain is not removed, use a commercial floor cleaner that is safe for tiles.
Ink stains. Soak a cloth (not a sponge) in a mixture of bleach and water. Lay the cloth on top of the stain until it is no longer visible.
