Could you ever think of going back to the days where every dish had to be washed by hand? No way! Thanks to your trusty dishwasher, only select cookware and dishes need special one on one care. While this appliance does save time, water, and money, it can become quite filthy — and smelly!
How to Sterilize the Dishwasher
- First, stop up and fill the kitchen sink with warm water and some dish soap. Remove the filter from your dishwasher and use this miniature bath to clean it thoroughly.
- Next, you’ll want to take out any removable pieces or attachments. Removable parts like the utensil holder can be cleaned more thoroughly if you hand wash it in warm water and dish soap (like you did with the filter). A little hand washing now goes a long way!
Remove the bottom dish rack and inspect the lower portion of the dishwasher. Look for and remove any food debris, especially in the drain. Once all of the food debris has been removed and the drain area has been wiped clean, reinstall the lower dish rack.
- Turn your dishwasher to the hottest, longest setting. Once water begins filling up on the bottom, open up the dishwasher, and add in two cups of white vinegar. Allow this to sit for at least a half hour.
- Take a small brush (a toothbrush works) and begin scrubbing your appliance until your heart desires! Areas to pay attention to include: the drain, corners, soap dispensers, the door’s gasket, and any other small crevices.
- Close the door and allow the cycle to finish. For those who haven’t cleaned their dishwasher in a very long time, consider running the dishwasher on a second empty cycle.
