How to Avoid Thanksgiving Day Plumbing Nightmares

Murphy’s Law says that when something can go wrong, it will go wrong. Having a plumbing problem develop on Thanksgiving is the last time you’d want it to occur, so you should be prepared for it to happen. Here are a few plumbing nightmares that can easily occur and how you can avoid them.

Bottle Leftover Grease/Oils

Whether you’re deep frying your turkey or have a pan filled with leftover grease on the stove, whatever you do — DO NOT pour this down the drain! (And don’t even think about flushing it either.) Grease and oils, whether they’re hot or cold, will solidify once inside of your drain pipes. Bottle leftover grease/oils in old jars, or freeze it in a plastic container and scrape it into the garbage.

Place a Waste Bin In the Bathroom

You know not to flush anything down the toilet other than toilet paper and human waste, right? Even if you might know this, your house guests might not! Place a small waste bin in the bathroom to encourage your guests to throw any items here instead of flushing them.

Leave a Plunger For Your Guests

This one goes without saying, but we’re going to say it anyway. Leave a plunger next to the toilet for your guests. Nothing is more embarrassing than visiting someone else’s home and clogging their toilet. Not only will you save them the embarrassment of walking away from their newfound clog, but it will also prevent the clog from worsening if others use the toilet after them.

Keep Plumber’s Putty on Deck

Plumbing nightmares always happen when you least expect them to, which is why you should always be prepared (especially around the holidays). That’s why every homeowner should have a thing of plumber’s putty in their toolbox in case a plumbing leak does spring. This putty will allow you to stop the leak temporarily while you wait for the plumber to arrive. Avert your own crisis by being prepared!

Spend your Thanksgiving talking to family, eating delicious foods, and watching football — not on the phone with your local plumber! However, if you do have a plumbing emergency this holiday season, Len The Plumber will be waiting by our phones for your call.
