The Right Way to Clean Your Toilet

Flushing your toilet a few times isn’t cleaning it. In order to have a toilet that isn’t covered in germs and fecal matter (gross), make sure you take the time to clean it properly. Here’s the best method for cleaning your porcelain throne:

Step 1: Clear out the Surrounding Area

Before you begin cleaning the toilet, remove all of the items that surround the toilet or are on top of the tank. This includes any bathroom sprays, plungers, toilet paper holders, etc. The last thing you want is for them to get splashed with toilet water or cleaner.

Step 2: Apply the Cleaning Solution

Put the lid down, flush the toilet, and then proceed to add your choice of toilet bowl cleaner. The closer you get to the rim of the toilet with your cleaner, the better. Allow this cleaner to sit for a few minutes while you address the rest of the toilet.

Step 3: Wipe Down the Exterior

Begin cleaning the top of the toilet and work your way down. Choose a toilet cleaning spray and begin spraying and wiping down the toilet tank, along with its lid and handle. Once the tank is clean, begin spraying and wiping down the exterior of the bowl and its base.

Step 4: Address the Toilet Seat

Now comes for the dirtiest part — cleaning the actual toilet seat. Spray the seat, the underneath of the seat, the toilet lid, and the rim of the toilet. Wipe these areas down until they sparkle. Close the toilet lid and spray down the area behind the toilet seat. Make sure you clean underneath the hinges of the seat as well.

Step 5: Scrub the Bowl

Now that the cleaner has had time to marinade, begin scrubbing the inside of the bowl. Start at the underneath of the rim and work your way down to the hole of the toilet. Once the entire inside has been scrubbed, close the lid and flush the toilet.

Step 6: Finish With the Tank

One part of the toilet most people forget to clean is the inside of the toilet tank. After you clean your toilet tank, you will finally have a sparkling toilet (inside and out) to use upon your return to the bathroom!
